Half-Height Open Multidecks Reopen Store Sightlines and Give Grab-and-Go Displays a Better Position

Industry news analysis for community supermarkets, convenience chains and specialty food retailers

Retailers are rethinking what belongs in the centre of a supermarket. A tall cabinet can add capacity, but it can also block CCTV coverage, hide the checkout from staff and make a compact store feel divided into narrow rooms. The half-height open multideck is being used as a lower, more flexible alternative.

The Semi-Vertical / Half-Height Open Multideck Air Curtain Chiller gives customers direct access to chilled products while keeping the store’s main sightline open. It is suited to fresh juice, cut fruit, sandwiches, prepared salads, yoghurt and packaged cheese. Its top surface can also support controlled cross-merchandising, such as crackers beside cheese or cups beside ready-to-drink beverages.

createrefrigeration has developed the format around two practical questions: where the shopper’s eyes travel, and how the air curtain behaves when the store is busy. The answer depends on cabinet height, honeycomb airflow, return-air position, night blind, condenser ventilation and the route used by the replenishment trolley.

The Low Cabinet Advantage in the Centre Aisle

A high cabinet placed in the middle of a neighbourhood supermarket can create a blind corner. Staff may lose sight of the entrance. Customers may not see the next aisle until they walk around the equipment. The cost appears as weaker supervision, slower cleaning and less comfortable movement rather than on the original equipment quote.

A half-height unit keeps the floor visually connected. From the checkout, the manager can see over the case. From the main aisle, the customer can identify the colour and category of the offer before reaching it. That is useful for products bought with little planning: a chilled juice after work, a fruit cup for a child or a sandwich before a meeting.

A well-planned supermarket juice display should place the strongest sellers in the natural hand-and-eye zone, with clear pricing and a full front row. The open format makes stock condition visible. If the case looks half empty, the impulse effect disappears, so the replenishment route matters as much as the refrigeration capacity.

CREATE Refrigerator uses reduced cabinet height and adjustable shelf positions to support central-island and checkout applications. The top surface must be used carefully: dry goods, wine, crackers or paper cups may be suitable, but the display must not block the air outlet or introduce a hygiene conflict.

Honeycomb Airflow and the Cross-Draft Problem

An open multideck has no door to contain the cold air. Its performance depends on a stable air curtain. A honeycomb top outlet breaks the supply flow into many smaller streams, sending cooled air down across the product opening. A lower return grille collects the air and directs it back toward the evaporator.

This arrangement can reduce uneven cooling, but it cannot defeat a strong store draft. An entrance door, ceiling fan or HVAC diffuser aimed across the cabinet can tear the air curtain apart. The result is familiar: warm top shelves, cold lower trays and chilled air spilling into the customer aisle.

Keep cartons below the load line and clear of the lower return. Do not place a promotional board across the top outlet. The cabinet should be positioned with the supply direction, return side, condenser discharge and service clearance shown on the store drawing.

The best visual arrangement uses different equipment heights. A low supermarket freezer island can sit near the centre promotion, while a wall-mounted supermarket glass door refrigerator handles dairy and drinks. A heavier supermarket commercial display freezer can remain in the dedicated frozen zone. The sequence of low, medium and tall fixtures creates a readable store without turning the centre into a wall.

Plug-In Deployment and the Value of Self-Evaporation

Community stores often change their central display with the season. Summer drinks may move close to the checkout, while prepared foods take the position during a holiday campaign. A cabinet that requires new copper lines, floor drains and overnight concrete work is difficult to move.

A plug-in unit with an integrated compressor package can be positioned, levelled and connected to the specified local power supply without an external refrigeration circuit through the floor. Installation must still follow the factory manual, local electrical rules and the destination market’s safety requirements.

A heated or hot-gas self-evaporating pan can handle condensate and defrost water in suitable applications. That may remove the need for a floor drain and avoid expensive concrete cutting in an operating store. Buyers should confirm water capacity, humidity limits, cleaning access, energy draw and the procedure for an unusually wet operating period.

Self-evaporation is not maintenance-free. The drain, pan, condenser and surrounding grille still need inspection. Dust, food debris and a blocked line can turn a useful feature into a service call. A weekly check should cover cabinet temperature, product loading, return-air opening, pan condition and condenser cleanliness.

Night Blinds and Measured Energy Savings

An open case continues to exchange air after the store closes. A slow-retracting insulated night blind reduces the exposed opening and lowers the overnight refrigeration load. The closing routine should be simple: face the products, remove unsuitable stock, lower the blind, check the bottom seal and record the cabinet temperature.

In a full plan containing supermarket display fridges, a standard display fridge supermarket run and supermarket display fridge freezers, night blinds can reduce the after-hours load on open fixtures while closed-door equipment holds its own setpoint. The saving depends on opening hours, ambient temperature, product load, blind fit and controller settings, so store managers should compare meter readings before and after installation.

The same plan may include a supermarket seafood display case and a meat freezer supermarket unit. Seafood and frozen meat have different cleaning, drainage and temperature duties. A factory-direct programme can coordinate the external dimensions and container packing without pretending that every cabinet performs the same job.

Turnkey Sourcing and Store-Fit Planning

A half-height case is often one part of a broader order. The buyer may need a chilled wall run, a seafood case, frozen islands, branded beverage equipment and spare parts in the same shipment. The source factory can coordinate OEM dimensions, shelf layouts, LED lighting, night blinds, casters, electrical specifications and mixed-container packing.

If delivery is quoted on a DDP basis, record the destination address, customs scope, duties, unloading method and final placement responsibility. The store manager should know whether the quotation includes only delivery to the kerb or also unloading and commissioning inside the shop.

Before approval, request the airflow drawing, compressor location, refrigerant, rated power, noise level, night-blind material, self-evaporation method, service clearance and 2D-to-3D store layout. A smaller cabinet is not automatically the better cabinet if its motor compartment reduces usable display area or blocks the aisle.

Half-Height Chiller Selection Matrix

Store zoneRecommended configurationSelection standard
Centre or checkout approachHalf-height open multideck with honeycomb air curtainClear sightline, reachable shelves, visible pricing and trolley clearance
Produce and grab-and-go zoneGentle-airflow chiller with defined loading lineStable airflow, unobstructed return, suitable display depth and easy replenishment
Full-store cold-chain routeOpen multideck coordinated with freezer islands and glass-door casesBalanced heat load, service access, matching heights and separate electrical duties
Deployment and night operationIntegrated plug-in package with self-evaporating pan and slow night blindNo external drain where suitable, documented local power, measured after-hours saving

The half-height format works when the store needs access and visibility as much as cold holding. Protect the air curtain from cross-drafts, keep the return grille clear and make the night blind part of the closing routine.
